1 John 3:11-18 (New American Standard Bible)
In the following (selected) verses does the Bible mean, physical brother, brother in the faith or simply all mankind? No this is not a trick question. Is there an answer for me?
11 For this is the message, which you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another;
13 Do not be surprised, brethren, if the world hates you.
14 We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love abides in death.
15 Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer; and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
16 We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
17 But whoever has the world's goods, and sees his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him?
I hope to get some comments!

I went to above (Dutch) I think or My answer would be this:
The bible-text meaning is 'how I see it' : for "all mankind". Or in other words: you might not have to take "the brother" as a person, but the story of "Kain & Abel" as an example for other 'as-alike moments in your personal life' .
Truus,
Does this answering your question?
I've sent you the Dutch bible-text by Email... my Thoughts in Dutch...
