The answer to previous entry.

Phylacteries:
Two small leather boxes worn during morning prayers by Orthodox and Conservative Jews after the age of 13.

Matthew 23:1-5 (New American Standard Bible)
Pharisaism Exposed

1 Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples,
2 Saying: "The scribes and the Pharisees have seated
themselves in the chair of Moses;
3 Therefore all that they tell you, do and observe,
but do not do according to their deeds;
for they say things and do not do them.
4 They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on men's shoulders,
but they themselves are unwilling to move them with so much as a finger.
5 But they do all their deeds to be noticed by men; for they broaden their
phylacteries and lengthen the tassels of their garments

Those little leather boxes are filled with scripture, or are at least a symbol of scripture. It's from Deuteronomy 6:

6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

The Pharisees made theirs bigger to make themselves look more spiritural.
